Our client Osram contacted us with a request to build a universal and easy-to-use solution to control the growth of plants in urban areas all year round.

Osram is a high-tech company known for its high-quality optical systems popular across the globe. Its top-notch optical solutions and technologies are used by the world’s leading corporations, including NASA, and promote innovation in many sectors, including horticulture lighting.

The company launched an Urban Farming startup to assist farmers with their everyday goals. As we know, farmers need to permanently monitor the health conditions of plants: their growth, soil humidity, temperature, etc.

That’s why Osram was interested in designing a one-stop and intuitive solution aimed at managing farming routines and adjusting its critical parameters. Keeping your crop yield under digital control lets you make the most out of your farming production.

Creation of a one-stop platform to collect and analyze crop yield data

Development of an intuitive dashboard for farmers, alerting them about changes in monitored parameters, and providing them with productivity analysis. Having this data in hand, they can promptly act and adjust light, temperature, air, and soil conditions on a farm

Deploy the network of IoT-based sensors to ensure correct measurement of growth parameters

How Data Streams from IoT Devices

Our primary task was to set up the data flow from sensors to the cloud and, finally, to the user dashboard.

Transmitters or sensors measured parameters of water, air, light, and soil to deliver data about the health conditions of plants. To implement this solution, we chose the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform and built up the data connection between serverless IoT devices.

This choice saved infrastructure costs and, therefore, made the whole solution more productive.

To prevent negative scenarios and increase crop yield, our AI systems additionally process images transmitted by drones and satellites.

In special cases, we used spectrophotometry. Next, the information was sent to the server so that the neural network can generate the best possible combination of light for each individual greenhouse.

A closed but flexible architecture was suited for the joint project with OSRAM. The architecture consisted of several parts: sensors, communication channels, cloud (AWS), and touched the front-end in its final point.

Heavily modified transmitters act as sensor devices: these are hygrometers, air & soil thermometers, sensors for a permanent tracking of physical and chemical soil characteristics, weather stations, and sensors to measure the flow rate and filling level of the hydraulic systems.

IoT data was collected through multiple channels, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The data resources were organized with the help of Amazon Web Service (AWS).
